Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition that causes patchy hair loss, often appearing suddenly and progressing unpredictably. It’s a condition that affects not only the scalp, but confidence and wellbeing too.
While medical treatments such as corticosteroid creams, minoxidil foam, or anti-inflammatory shampoos can play a key role in regrowth, supporting your scalp and hair with gentle, non-irritating care is equally important—especially during such a sensitive time.
At Laura Simmons, we believe that healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp—and that even when your hair is struggling, your care routine should still feel comforting, indulgent, and rooted in understanding.
A Real Journey of Recovery
Back in June, a client came to see me after noticing sudden patches of hair loss. From my professional assessment, I believed it was Alopecia Areata, and I encouraged her to continue with her upcoming appointment with a qualified trichologist for confirmation.
Following her consultation, the diagnosis was confirmed, and she was prescribed a topical steroid cream and minoxidil foam to help manage inflammation and encourage regrowth. Unfortunately, after a week of perseverance, the minoxidil caused scalp soreness and discomfort.
After discussing her options, she decided to continue with her prescribed steroid cream while switching to my Sandalwood Shampoo and Conditioner and Biotin Gummies to gently care for her scalp and hair during recovery.
By late August, the results were clear: the inflammation had calmed, and soft new growth was visible in the previously affected areas.
This journey highlights something I see often—not every treatment suits everyone. Sometimes, the scalp simply needs calm, supportive care that strengthens its natural balance.
Medical vs. Natural Support: Understanding the Difference
It’s important to understand that alopecia areata is autoimmune in nature. The body’s immune system mistakenly targets its own hair follicles, disrupting normal hair growth. Medical treatments are often required to calm this immune response and encourage regrowth.
These may include:
-
Topical corticosteroids to reduce inflammation
-
Minoxidil foam to stimulate hair follicles
-
Ketoconazole shampoos to support scalp health and reduce inflammation
These treatments should always be used under the guidance of a GP, dermatologist, or trichologist.
Where Our Products Come In
Our products are not medical treatments—but they are formulated to support scalp and hair health, helping to maintain balance, hydration, and comfort during treatment or recovery.
Our Sandalwood Shampoo and Conditioner
Free from sulphates, SLS, parabens, and artificial fragrance, they are ideal for sensitive or medicated scalps.
Formulated with naturally derived ingredients such as:
-
Lavender Oil – to soothe and condition
-
Geranium Oil – to promote balance
-
Sandalwood and Argan Oils – to hydrate and nourish the scalp
This blend helps support the scalp barrier, calm irritation, and maintain a healthy environment for new growth to take hold.
Our Biotin Gummies
Our Biotin Gummies offer internal support through carefully selected nutrients known to contribute to normal hair health, including:
-
Biotin (Vitamin B7) – contributes to the maintenance of normal hair
-
Vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, and E – support normal immune and cellular function
-
Folic Acid – contributes to normal amino acid synthesis and tissue growth
While they won’t treat the autoimmune cause of alopecia areata, they can help support the quality and resilience of new growth as the scalp begins to recover.
A Supportive Approach
Hair loss is never just cosmetic—it affects confidence and emotional wellbeing. That’s why I believe that hair care during alopecia should be more than functional; it should feel nurturing.
My products are designed to be used alongside treatment, not instead of it. They’re there to help keep the scalp comfortable, hydrated, and cared for—so that when your follicles are ready, your hair is too.
Every recovery story is unique, but with the right combination of professional guidance and gentle care, healthy regrowth is possible.
